Long live the Web

The inventor of the World Wide Web, Sir Tim Berners-Lee has published an article for Scientific American. I think everyone should read it.

Long Live the Web: A Call for Continued Open Standards and Neutrality

If I had half the knowledge and eloquence that Berners-Lee possesses, I’d be blogging about this topic non-stop. As it is, I tend to sound like an ignorant conspiracy theorist.

I’m not anti-capitalist. I’m not against profit. I’m just not naive enough to believe that there is any such thing as a benevolent corporation. As much as they appear to be Gods, the fact is that these companies don’t give us their services for free because they love us. People seriously need to start questioning this more.

The problem is that phases like “Net neutrality” are guaranteed to wash over anyone but hardened geeks and Internet professionals. Everyone needs to understand these issues; perhaps Justin Bieber could front a ‘Save the Web’ campaign?
